Bio Living Lab @ Deutsches Museum
Munich, October 2-9, 2025

Our Bio Living Lab @ Deutsches Museum curated by Studio Nima is a wrap! Safe to say, the Bio Living Lab was a huge success, the feedback has been incredible. Visitors from all over the world and of all ages were stopping by, getting curious, inspired, and excited about the possibilities of bio-based innovation.

The Bio Living Lab brought together a diverse group of innovators showcasing biomaterials that range from packaging and building materials to leather and textile alternatives, made from algae, mycelium, bacteria, agricultural waste, and many others. But the Bio Living Lab was much more than just an exhibition, it’s a living, learning space. With interactive sessions and open formats, we have had visitors even bringing their own ideas for experiments and future materials, and this is what makes our Bio Living Lab alive. Things were growing on site and the area was constantly transforming.

Exhibitors

The Bio Living Lab exhibition showcased a diverse range of biomaterial innovations made from algae, mycelium, agricultural waste, and more. During the Bio Living Lab at Deutsches Museum more than 6000 visitors could see and learn about some of the latest biomaterial innovations. The exhibition showcased 23 such material innovations coming from 9 different countries. This created a window for people with all types of backgrounds and coming from all demographics to learn about a subject that is otherwise not accessible for everyone. Through showcasing the latest biomaterial innovations, we aim to spark curiosity, inspire people, and highlight the role of material innovation in sustainable development.

Educational Formats

Parallel to the exhibition, the Bio Living Lab offered learning formats, such as guided tours and workshops. The goal of these formats was to provide and insight on important matters around biomaterials and innovation. Through these formats, around 600 participants were reached during the Bio Living Lab.

Guided Tours:

As a part of the exhibition, daily guided tours were available in English and in German, which allowed visitors to gain insights into the innovations that were displayed. They also opened a room for dialogue and questions which resulted in the visitors learning on the challenges material developers face and what the biggest barriers of adoption for bio-based materials currently are.

During the 8 days that the Bio Living Lab was at the Deutsches Museum, 10 Workshops and Lab Sessions took place. These formats were designed in a way that visitors could have a deep dive into different subjects, with a hands-on approach that allowed them to engage and interact with biomaterials. We hosted Workshops and Lab Sessions that touched on topics such as mycelium, hemp-starch composite and leather alternatives.

Workshops:

The “Fiber Futures – Bowls from Biocomposites” workshop was facilitate by the TUM Chair of Architecture and Design. It addressed the basics of a bio-based hemp-starch composite and also offered an opportunity to experiment with these type of biomaterial.

Touching on the subject of alternative leather, Anastasia Jais, the Founder of Substanz Team also facilitated a workshop addressing this area of innovation. During the workshop participants worked with leather alternatives allowing them to get a feeling for the materials and their possible applications.

And our Biomaterials Workshop facilitated by us at Studio Nima covered the subject of biomaterials in a broader way, diving into the various raw materials that can be used to produce biomaterials and presenting real life case studies of challenges that material innovators face.

Lab Sessions:

A Mycelium Lab Session was facilitated by the Munich-based startup Mimbiosis. During this session, participants explored the world of mycelium and experienced the production of mycelium products from nature through lab finishing as an end product.

As part of the program, several Biosonofication sessions were offered, during which Bionic and the Wires, a music band from Bristol, shared with people from all ages the sound of mushrooms. They explained how the mushrooms’ bioelectric signals can be translated into music and helped visitors discover the creative potential and challenges of biosonification.
