Circular Innovation Through Bio-based Materials

Policy Pathways and Stakeholder Perspectives in the European Union - 2026 Report

We’re excited to share our latest publication “Circular Innovation Through Bio-Based Materials – Policy Pathways and Stakeholder Perspectives in the EU.”

The report draws on practical insights from 11 innovator profiles and 5 stakeholder interviews, framed by an overview of the political and regulatory landscape for biomaterials in the European Union.

The featured profiles and interviews highlight material innovators developing bio-based solutions across a range of applications, from textiles to packaging and beyond, using diverse feedstocks such as algae, mycelium or agricultural waste. They include perspectives from startups, research institutes, and other key actors driving innovation in this space.

Many thanks to the participating innovators and stakeholders who shared their insights and critical reflections into policy and scaling perspectives, which gave the foundation of this report:

  • Fraunhofer UMSICHT
  • NUVI
  • Ohoskin
  • PYRATEX®
  • Reselo
  • revoltech
  • S.LAB

The report was developed in collaboration with students from the Technical University of Munich within the framework of the course Sustainability Politics and Policy at the Hochschule für Politik München (HfP) at TUM. It was great to work with Fernando Cuevas Díaz, Elena Fischer, Lukas Mathy and Veza von Lojewski, thank you for your hard work that you put into this project.

Our gratitude also goes to Prof. Dr. Miranda Schreurs for providing the academic foundation and critical perspective that shaped the political and theoretical framework of this project.
